Spirals do not meet code as a primary means of exit to and from an area of your home. There are areas in your home where spirals may meet code, such as to a library loft, or when it's a secondary stair. Check local building codes to confirm if it will meet code in your area.

There are lower priced spirals in the marketplace. Perhaps the most common is one that can be used outdoors or indoors. It's assembled from metal stocked parts, which are adjustable in several ways, metal spacers are used to adjust the overall height of their spirals. Some spiral stairs offer a bendable plastic handrail. Due to their lightweight nature, they do tend to be shaky. We do not offer these, but you can find sources on the internet for this type of spiral. This is an affordable solution for a tight budget and small space.

Both the overall height (rise) and the diameter will be specific to your project, as well as the starting and ending angles for your walkway and the species of wood. Spiral Sizes and Dimensions

Because each spiral we make is custom designed and built, we can make it in any even-inch size. Generally, people want the largest size their space can fit, for ease of use. We recommend 6’ or larger, which allows a walkable space of 26” clear between the center post and handrail.

Standard Spiral Dimensions

Rail clearance is 2-1/4" from end of tread with 1-1/2" finger clearance between tread end and wall.

Small Space Spiral Dimensions

Rail clearance is 1-7/8" from end of tread with 1-1/2" finger clearance between rail and wall. Clearance between tread and wall is 3/4".
