Throughout the rest of Indiana we offer our custom assembled products and kits, which bring you the high-level custom stair and rail styles and designs available in all our products. Our shop, design staff, and installation team work out of our 50,000-square-foot facility in Sandwich, Illinois, roughly 90 minutes from the state line.

Whatever the project — a contemporary open-riser lake stair, a historic reproduction, or a traditional hardwood staircase; a new custom home or a remodel of your stairs and rails — we will bring your inspirations to life.

Throughout Indiana and the Midwest, Designed Stairs specializes in curved stairs and luxury stairs for upper-bracket homes.

If your stair project requires more than your trim carpenter's skills, bringing in a stair professional is your solution. Designed Stairs — one of the few stair professionals serving northern Indiana — has been in Indiana for over 55 years.

What Makes Custom Stair Work Technically Demanding

Staircase project in Indiana

Curved balcony rail built for Integrity Custom Home Improvement.

  • A staircase often involves multiple sections that need to align to each other perfectly. Unlike doors, windows, and cabinets that come in “boxes”, stairs are changing rise and run as they move through the space.
  • A staircase may have hundreds of individual parts; the design of intersections and connections needs to be planned before any part is cut.
  • Curved and spiral stairs have more complex requirements that interact with the geometry, which we work through at the design stage.
  • Every stair is designed and fabricated to order around the actual opening, rise, run, and design direction — there is no off-the-shelf version of this work.
  • We know Indiana building codes and build to those codes in every stair.
  • We know the northern Indiana market — lakefront homes and upper-bracket homes — and deliver the unique styles they expect.

Types of Custom Staircases We Build for Indiana Projects

Designed Stairs is your full-service staircase partner, from concept to completion, proudly serving Indiana. We handle every detail with care and craftsmanship.

Curved Staircases

The most technically demanding stair type we build. We use a traditional Tangent Handrail method for a continuous, flowing handrail without flat sections or breaks — a higher skill level most stair companies do not offer.

  • Radius, pitch, and handrail geometry worked through together
  • Continuous tangent handrails
  • 3D renderings available

Open-Riser and Floating Stairs

A natural fit for contemporary lake homes.

  • Exposed structural connections demand precise joinery
  • CNC-milled treads and stringers
  • Glass panels and cable rail
  • Stainless steel hardware

Traditional Hardwood Staircases

The majority of our northern Indiana work — custom homes, remodels, and renovations in premium hardwoods.

  • The design matches the architecture of the home
  • Turned wood balusters and box newels
  • A range of handrail profiles
  • Available in any suitable hardwood: oak, maple, alder, walnut

Historic Reproductions

One of the few stair companies in the Midwest who recreate curved rails on historic stairs.

  • CNC-lathe reproduction
  • Hand carving where the detail requires it
  • Matched newels, balusters, and handrail profiles

Lake Home Staircases

Custom stair styles designed for your lake home, from Lake Michigan to the inland lakes.

  • Lake home stairs and floating stairs with open treads
  • Spiral stairs for lofts

Custom Staircases Indiana FAQs

Does Designed Stairs install in Indiana?

Yes, in northwestern Indiana. Our installation territory runs from Lake Michigan down to Lowell and east to Chesterton, covering communities such as Crown Point, Valparaiso, Michigan City, La Porte, Merrillville, Munster, Schererville, and St. John. Everywhere else in Indiana — including South Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart, Granger, and Indianapolis — we supply fully fabricated stairs, assembled stairs, and stair kits. Reach out if you are not sure which applies to your location and we will confirm.

How much does a custom staircase cost in Indiana?

It depends on the type of stair, opening size, wood species, railing system, and design complexity. Custom spiral stairs start around $15,000. Full custom architectural staircases range from $3,000 to $150,000. Prefabricated stair and rail kits are available at lower price points. We provide detailed quotes after the site visit.

How long does a custom staircase take to build and install?

Eight to fourteen weeks from quote to installation is the standard for most projects. Production timeline depends on design complexity, material selection, and shop schedule. We provide a production schedule when the project releases to the shop.

Can you reproduce original stair parts in older Indiana homes?

Yes. We reproduce period-specific balusters, newels, handrail profiles, and other millwork components using CNC lathes and hand carving. We are one of the few stair companies in the Midwest that recreates curved rails on historic stairs. If the profile exists in the house, we can measure it, reverse-engineer it, and replicate it.

Do you work with builders and architects on Indiana projects?

Yes. We work with custom home builders, architects, interior designers, and remodelers throughout the state. We provide early stair budget planning, CAD drawings, field measuring, manufacturing, and installation support. Involving us early in the planning process produces a better result and avoids framing conflicts.

Can I start with a Zoom showroom consultation?

Yes. If traveling to our showroom in Sandwich, Illinois is not practical, we offer Zoom showroom sessions where you can review stair styles, wood species, railing systems, and design details. It is a good way to work through early decisions before committing to a project direction.
